The District champs from 1A Ione / Arlington

Play on? No, Playoffs!

The 2023 volleyball playoffs are upon us, with 36 first round matches tonight between 6A, 3A and 1A.

Playoffs continue on Saturday with second round matches in 6A, 3A and 1A and first round matches in 5A, 4A and 2A.

After Saturday, we will have the eight teams in each classification that will get to the state tournament site, starting Friday, Nov. 3.

The defending champions, in case you forgot, are Sheldon in 6A, Crescent Valley in 5A, Marshfield in 4A, Valley Catholic in 3A, Salem Academy in 2A and Damascus Christian in 1A.

All six teams made the playoffs this year, with Crescent Valley and Marshfield the highest seeds at No. 1 in their respective classifications and Damascus Christian, which graduated a ton of talent, as the lowest seed at No. 14 in 1A.

Damascus Christian was the only defending champion not to make the final OSAAtoday Volleyball Coaches Polls, which were published earlier today.

Which teams will make the final eight? Calling my shot…

In 6A, it nearly looks like chalk to me: Jesuit, Central Catholic, Sheldon, Nelson, Oregon City, Sherwood, Sunset and Sprague. Central Catholic over South Salem is not really an upset. South Medford also could cause problems and Barlow is a dark horse to deny Sherwood.

In 5A, I like Crescent Valley, Summit, La Salle Prep, Thurston, Crater, Wilsonville, Silverton and West Albany. Summit and Ls Salle have the tradition to pull upsets; Silverton has the state’s best player and upends Bend in a classic play-in match that could as easily have been a semifinal.

Give me Marshfield, The Dalles, North Bend, Cascade, Mazama, Tillamook, Philomath and Marist Catholic to make the “State 8.” Philomath over Crook County is a mild upset, but you’ve got to pick some!

In 3A, I’ll take Sisters, Scio, Valley Catholic, Burns, Cascade Christian, Santiam Christian, Dayton and Pleasant Hill. There are just too many state-worthy teams in 3A. Some will have to lose.

I’m picking the top eight seeds to make state in 2A: Western Christian, Santiam, Grant Union, Salem Academy, Oakridge, Lowell, Gaston and Portland Christian. It will be interesting to see how Western Christian, which played just a JV schedule a year ago; and Portland Christian, which was barely a .500 team last year, will respond to playoff pressure.

Finally, in 1A, I’ve got a couple of big upsets in my final eight: Crane, North Douglas, Joseph, Umpqua Valley Christian, Triangle Lake, Ione / Arlington, North Clackamas Christian and Powder Valley. Ione / Arlington is hot going into the playoffs and could give perennial power St. Paul trouble. Likewise NCC against upstart Crosshill Christian.

At the end of the day, I don’t root for anyone; I root for excitement! Good luck to all teams that are playoff-bound. May you all meet your year-end goals!

Note: We will be attempting to recap ALL playoff matches, starting tonight, on OSSA. org/today. Check back to see which teams survived and advanced.

Putnam on the Ritz!

Putnam (9-13 overall; 9-7 in conference) turned heads yesterday with a four-set takedown of La Salle Prep, which had entered the match 16-1 in conference play and 18-7 overall.

MB Rylee Lemen and outsides Zoey Bauer and Alina Rucker combined for 50 kills in the match for Putnam, which got great clutch blocking from freshman middle Kennedy Brown late in Game 4 to seal the upset.

“We came to play and shut down La Salle,” said coach Jasmine Varela. “It was an all-around team effort.”

Powder Valley takes it on the chin and still wins!

Powder Valley head coach Marji Lind shared this about Saturday’s District Championship tournament, which the Badgers won by defeating Imbler and Joseph.

The impetus to reach out wasn’t to share news of the victory, which she admitted was “great,” but rather “because of the amazing unique things that happened that make this sport fantastic! The importance of instantly-called-upon bench players, support from fellow coaches who. without a second thought. took their time and training to help a player from our team; to the amazing officiating crew, who showed grace and worked through a unique situation; and teammates offering up their own jerseys to replace bloody ones, knowing this would keep them from the court.”

Lind shared her Facebook post on the subject, which we reproduce here:

“After a fun and exciting event, sometimes it takes a minute to reflect and recognize all the unique aspects and blessings that occur throughout that event to make such a great outcome. Last night a group of 11 amazing young ladies took another step toward their goal as a team, by becoming the District Champs! Throughout that game, which was a nail biter, this group of girls were challenged physically and mentally. Early in the set, one of our players split her chin wide open going for a ball (required 5 stitches after the game). She came out, blood dripping. We turned to another player to fill that spot and without skipping a beat she did so! All the while, two coaches who have medical training, from other teams Imbler and Echo, began working on our injured player to contain the blood so she could return to play. Then a fellow teammate ran to get an extra jersey for her to change into, as she had blood on hers. Throughout the game, she had to sub in and out, as bandaging needed to be switched out frequently.  Officials offered grace as we faced this challenge. Another teammate on the bench offered up her jersey if needed. All the while her teammates on the floor continued to focus and battle the game. It truly was amazing to reflect on. So great job girls and I mean the ENTIRE team, for it truly was a team effort! And thank you to the officiating crew, the tournament organizers, Jacey Teeter from Imbler and Coach Thew from Echo for your amazing help throughout the match.”

News and notes

Cascade Christian completed a perfect league season on Saturday with straight set wins against Coquille and St. Mary’s of Medford. The Challengers went 10-0 in league and 2-0 in the league tournament, all without dropping a set.

Cascade Christian used a balanced attack throughout the day on Saturday, led by senior setter Molly Griffin, who had 58 assists and 15 digs.

***

Emma Brewer had 34 kills on Saturday to help Salem Academy overcome Western Christian in the Tri River League Playoff Tournament.

***

Defending 5A champion Crescent Valley swept South Albany yesterday to push its conference winning streak to 32 straight matches. The Raiders won the Mid-Willamette Conference title for the second straight year.

***

Ione / Arlington will enter the 1A playoffs on a seven-match winning streak after taking the Big Sky District Tournament on Saturday. The Cardinals defeated South Wasco County in the championship match, avenging a loss to the Redsides on the last day of September.

“We came out with clear minds and ready to win,” noted coach Dawn Eynetich. “The girls played some of the best volleyball they have played all season. This group is the epitome of a team.”

Standouts for Ione / Arlington in the win over South Wasco County included Jolene Serrano, who had five aces; Calli Troutman, who had four kills, three blocks and an ace; and Grace Claughton, who contributed six kills and six blocks.

***

Najiah Knight, a junior on the Ione / Arlington team is a bull rider who is very well known in the rodeo world.

"Last week we had the Associated Press at our practice taking videos, pictures and doing interviews with her," said Eynetich. "To us she is the just the happy, motivating, best teammate a person could ask for. But we go places and people recognize her, want her autograph and are starstruck!"
