OSAAtoday looks at Tuesday’s semifinal playoff baseball games in all classifications in the OSAA / OnPoint Community Credit Union State Championships.
6A
No. 1 Clackamas 8, No. 4 Jesuit 1 – Jonah Lam’s triple to open the third inning sparked a five-run frame and the Cavaliers controlled the game the rest of the way to make the finals for the first time since 2018. Ben Foglio had three hits, and Jacob Strube had two hits and two RBIs for the Cavaliers, who outhit the Crusaders 13-4. Cade King overcame shaky control and gave way to Jaxon Wetzler in the fourth with a 6-1 lead. Wetzler yielded three hits over four innings to get the win.
No. 3 West Linn 5, No. 2 Tualatin 2 -- West Linn scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and led the rest of the way to reach the state title game for the sixth time in the last 11 seasons. Junior Jack Frishman went five innings on the mound, yielding just one earned run, to improve to 10-0 on the year. Caden Klouda got the save and had the go-ahead RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth. Cohen Bissell had three hits and an RBI for the Lions and Carson Doblie contributed two hits and two RBIs to the Lions cause.
5A
No. 8 Thurston 4, No. 4 Summit 1 – Grady Saunders dominated on the mound to help the Colts dethrone the 2025 champions and return to the championship game after a one-year hiatus. Saunders pitched 6.2 innings and struck out 11. Carlin Crutcher, Parker Edwards and Brody Corgain combined to go 6-for-10 with three RBIs to fuel Thurston’s offense. Jackson Parker had two hits for Summit in the loss.
No. 6 Central 4, No. 10 Ridgeview 2 -- JT Girod hurled a complete game, striking out nine, to send Central to the its first state title game since 2019. The Panthers took the lead for good in the third inning. Joe Mendazona had a clutch RBI double in the frame and the bottom third of the lineup -- Easton Herbert, Tyler Olafson and Cooper Larson -- combined for four hits, three runs scored and an RBI for Central, which did not make the playoffs a year ago.
4A
No. 12 Tillamook 3, No. 1 Henley 1 (9 innings) – Tillamook pushed over two unearned runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning – on RBI singles from Lakota Navarre and Kevin Hurlimann – to stun the top-seeded Hornets. Jakoby Goss started for the Mooks and went 5.2 innings of scoreless ball. He was relieved by Wrigley Percy and he held Henley at bay until the bottom of the seventh inning, when an RBI fielder’s choice knotted the game at 1-1. Corbin Hamilton pitched into the ninth for Henley and was brilliant, but was the hard-luck loser after the two-out error in the ninth opened the door for the go-ahead runs. Henley loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, but could not score, as Percy’s struck out the side to secure the win. “This was an absolute gut check game,” said Tillamook coach Travis Moncrief. “Every inning we would bend a little but would not break!”
No. 3 Marist Catholic 4, No. 2 Scappoose 1 – Three runs in the top of the first proved enough to send the Spartans back to the state championship game for the third straight year. Gianni Lombardi pitched a complete game for Marist and had two hits, as did Jalen Smith and Grady Hazen, while Alec Malpass was 3-for-4. Hazen’s homer in the fourth provided the final margin of victory. Nolan Lennox had a double and the game's only RBI on a squeeze bunt for Scappoose. Notable: there were no walks in the game.
3A
No. 1 Taft 2, No. 5 Warrenton 1 – Zack Hankins homered in the bottom of the first and later hit a sacrifice fly, and he and Lonnie West combined to give up just one run to the Warriors. Taft was helped out by defense from LF Hunter Hanson and SS Hayden Weiss, each of whom cut down runners trying to score. Taft will play in its first-ever championship game.
No. 7 South Umpqua / Days Creek 4, No. 3 Creswell 1 -- South Umpqua / Days Creek turned around a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth, tacked on two more in the fifth and made them hold up to reach the title game for the first time since 2022. Logan Schwerdt and Rudy Vasquez combined to give up just one run on six hits for the Lancers, who got big hits from Camden Black, Trace Esterbrook and Crew Donner in that key fourth-inning rally.
2A/1A
No. 1 Kennedy 14, No. 4 Monroe / Alsea 5 – A full team effort sent the Trojans back to the state title tilt after a one-year hiatus. Kennedy banged out 13 hits, with Brody Panuke, Creo Walker, Landon Kline and Gio Vaquera all producing multiple hits and scoring multiple runs. Vaquera, Jake Beyer and Henry Beyer pitched well for the victors. Aiden Strand had three hits in the loss for Monroe, which was bidding to return to a state final for the first time in 11 years.
No. 2 Crosshill Christian 7, No. 3 Umpqua Valley Christian 6 -- Crosshill Christian, a four-year varsity program, took advantage of six UVC errors to build a 4-1 lead through two innings, got another huge hit from Gavin Chin and held off a furious comeback from UVC to knock out the two-time reigning champions. Miles Lute was solid on the mound for the Eagles but needed help in relief from Carter Hinderks after a three-run homer from UVC in the sixth made it close. Hinderks shut the door to send Crosshill Christian to the finals for the first time in program history.
