A look at Wednesday’s second-round 6A, 3A and 2A/1A playoff baseball games in the OSAA / OnPoint Community Credit Union State Championships. We will update this story as results roll in.

6A

No. 1 South Salem 12, No. 16 Sheldon 11 (8 innings) – Undefeated South Salem trailed, 8-4, heading into the bottom of the 5th before Jackson Buckingham hit a two-run homer. Sawyer Nelson, the state’s long ball leader, went yard to score two one inning later to knot things at 8-8, his second homer of the game. Sheldon scored twice in the 7th to take a 10-8 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, with 2 outs, Nelson hit a 2-run single to CF to tie it at 10-10. After Sheldon took an 11-10 lead in the top of the 8th, the Saxons loaded the bases with one out before Kevin Semm singled to left to plate two runs for the walk off 12-11 victory. Wow! Nelson finished with seven RBIs on the day.

No. 9 Grant 4, No. 8 Roseburg 3 Jinki Tomita threw a strong six innings for the Generals and Kaeden Cruse closed out the win in the seventh. Elliot Ration had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in the game-winning run.

No. 5 Jesuit 3, No. 12 Sandy 2 – Kyle Goodwin’s bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh helped Jesuit walk off to the win. Goodwin drove home two for the game. Calvin Martinez earned the win in relief for the Crusaders. Brayden Sievertsen started and pitched well for Sandy. He also drove in one of the Pioneers’ two runs.

No. 4 Sherwood 3, No. 13 Sprague 2--

No. 3 Central Catholic 11, No. 14 Grants Pass 0 (5 innings) – Central Catholic won for the 15th time in 16 games behind Sam Smith, who twirled the five-inning shutout. A lot of Rams had big days at the plate, notably the quartet of Matsen Saruwatari, Ryan Davis, Toussaint Kaptur and Jake Pachmayr, who combined for eight hits and nine RBIs.

No. 11 Sunset 3, No. 6 Clackamas 1Parker Raubuch pitched a complete game, scattering just five hits, and the Apollos got just enough offense to take the win. They scored on a bases-loaded walk, an RBI double from Gavin Riley and a run-scoring single from Marcus Pollard.

No. 7 McMinnville 8, No. 10 Tualatin 4Cam Hyder went six innings on the mound for the Grizzlies, yielding just one run, and went 3-for-4 at the plate with two driven in. The defense played great and helped keep any big innings from happening. Tualatin trailed, 8-1, but plated three in the seventh before a Timberwolf batter grounded out to SS Nash Opitz to end the game.

3A

No. 1 Blanchet Catholic 30, No. 16 Yamhill-Carlton 5 (5 innings) -- Overwhelming offense carried the top-seeded Cavaliers to the win. Dylan Cuff hit two home runs, including a grand slam. He finished with seven RBIs. Noah Hancock went 3-for-3, reached base five times, hit a three-run homer and drove in five.

No. 8 Burns/ Crane 12, No. 9 Santiam Christian 2 (5 innings) -- Santiam Christian jumped on top, 2-0, in the top of the third, but the Hilanders countered with a crooked number of their own in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by Sean McMullen's bases-clearing double. Orion Houck also drove in three runs on the day for BUrns / Crane, which got a strong start on the mound from Jack Wright.

No. 5 Sisters 7, No. 12 La Pine 6 – Sisters beat league rival La Pine for the fourth time this year, and second time in six days, thanks to a two-run fourth that made it 7-5 Outlaws. Kayl Mock doubled to drive in the go-ahead run and Landen Scott scored what proved to be the game winner on a wild pitch. Sisters had led 5-0, but saw La Pine fight back to tie the game at 5-5 in the top of the fourth. La Pine loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but Trent Gordon came on and limited the damage over the last two innings to just a sacrifice fly. “It’s tough matching up with a league opponent, especially one you’ve seen three times,” said Sisters coach Matt Hilgers. “La Pine did a great job competing. We’ve been in close games all year and did a good job of maintaining our composure and playing until the final out.”

No. 4 Taft 5, No. 20 Banks 0Ezra James threw four no-hit innings and Trenton Battle gave up just two hits in his three-inning stint as the Tigers shut out the Braves. Bobby Moore and Justice Kelso had two RBIs apiece for the victors.

No. 3 Warrenton 3, No. 14 Lakeview 0  -- Eli Neahring threw 5.1 innings of one-hit ball, striking out seven, for the defending champions. Zephan Lierce had a two-RBI double to break the scoreless tie in the 4th. Kollin Tacchini allowed six hits and struck out nine over 5.2 innings in the loss for Lakeview.

No. 6 North Valley 6, No. 11 Vale 4Dane Kissel went five innings to claim the win and Landon Allison fanned five in two innings of relief to earn the save for North Valley, which got two hits and an RBI apiece from Allison, Nolan Munoz and Justin Brunolli.

No. 7 South Umpqua 6, No. 10 Horizon Christian, Tualatin 2 -- South Umpqua scored five times in the bottom of the fifth to turn around a 2-1 deficit and put the Lancers on top for good. Talen Lamm had a two-run single to start the scoring in the frame and Tanner Beckham followed with an RBI single of his own. Drew Camp homered in the first to put South Umpqua on top, but Horizon Christian took the lead in the fourth on a two-run double from Dustin Long, a lead the Hawks held until the big Lancer outburst. Logan Schwerdt went the distance on the mound for Steve Stebbins' team, giving up just three hits and two runs.

No. 2 Cascade Christian 10, No. 15 Creswell 4 – Cascade Christian got a challenge from a good and well-coached Creswell team. Grady Sickler starred for the Challengers on the mound and at the dish. He pitched 5.1 innings of relief, with seven punch outs, to get the win; and had a double and triple and four RBIs. Wyatt Hurley, a sophomore like Sickler, also had two hits and collected three RBIs. Creswell scored two in the first and two in the fifth.


2A/1A

No. 1 Umpqua Valley Christian 12, No. 16 Lost River 2 (5 innings) -- Defending champion UVC scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth and every starter had at least one hit in the convincing win. Logan Anderson, Jonas Witt and Ty Hellenthal teamed for six hits and seven RBIs in support of winning pitcher Teagan Sprague, who went 4.2 innings, scattering four hits with five Ks.

No. 8 Irrigon 2, No. 9 Culver 1 -- Rene Garcia was dominant on the mound for Irrigon, allowing only five hits and one walk while fanning eight. Xander Olam executed a squeeze that led to the team’s only runs.

No. 5 Myrtle Point / Pacific 4, No. 12 Lowell 0 -- The Bobcats threw a combined no-hitter in the win. Ace Jake Sproul went the first 3.1 innings, striking out seven.

No. 4 Knappa 2, No. 13 Country Christian / North Clackamas Christian 0 – Knappa won a classic pitcher’s duel pitting two of the best hurlers in the state. Lukas Masters hurled a complete game for the Loggers, yielding just one hit while fanning 13. Tyson Smith also gave up just one hit while striking out nine, but he gave up two runs in the third, one scoring on Braxton Hill’s RBI triple.

No. 19 Portland Christian 8, No. 3 Clatskanie 3Noah Humphrey threw a complete game, yielding just one earned run, and Evan Satre and Jack Mazurowski combined for four hits and five RBIs for the Royals, who beat a higher-seeded opponent for the second straight game.

No. 6 Reedsport 10, No. 22 Crosspoint Christian 0  (5 innings) -- Bryson Manicke threw a two-hit shutout on 62 pitches for Reedsport in the five-inning game. He struck out three and got nine ground ball outs. Nate Farris had two hits and Manicke helped his cause with two hits and the walk off RBI. Reedsport benefited by walking five times and being hit by pitch an additional seven times.

No. 7 Monroe / Alsea 11, No. 10 St. Paul 8 -- The Dragons scored four runs in the sixth to put the final stamp on their win in a high-scoring affair. Asher Strand and Armando Monroy drove in three runs apiece for the victors.

No. 2 Kennedy 6, No. 15 Heppner / Ione 1Gio Vaquera pitched 5.2 innings of two-hit ball to lead the Trojans to victory. Colby Rich had two highlight-reel catches in center to help defensively.
