Is this a Pirated photo? Marshfield won its own tournament this past weekend

In this Notebook, we have news of tournament glory, a look at some Mighty Mites and both single-match and season-long stat stars.

Clearwater, full heart, can’t lose

An interloper from Idaho came into our state and won the Bend Clearwater Classic on Saturday. Skyview of Nampa used a superior effort from sophomore OH Bellamie Buess to sneak past both Sisters and Jesuit for the title.

Jesuit got strong play from OH Emma Williams and MB Lily Lansing in its runner up showing.

Sisters, which clinched the Mountain Valley Conference title earlier in the week, met up with Skyview in the quarters and won the first set before dropping the final two. Each set was back and forth, said Sisters coach Rory Rush. Setter Holly Davis and outsides Gracie Vohs and Gracelyn Myhre all shined for Sisters. Vohs and Myhre combined for 67 kills and eight aces for the event.

Forward Marsh

Marshfield won its own invitational for the second straight year on Saturday. The defending 4A state champions took wins over Douglas, Henley, The Dalles, Del Norte, Mazama and Churchill behind strong first two contacts from Gracie Peach and Ava Ainsworth. Fearsome hitters Tatum Montiel, Bridget Gould and Paige MacDuff combined for 123 kills. Montiel also had 33 digs, Gould tacked on 13 aces and Macduff had seven blocks.

Ione / Arlington current champion in Rally on the River

The Ione / Arlington Cardinals volleyball team won the Rally on the River tournament Saturday at Umpqua Community College. The team, which is 20-3 on the season, dropped just two sets the entire day, including one to Glide in the championship match.

Calli Troutman (27 kills and 15 blocks) and Grace Claughton (21 kills and eight blocks) were stout at the net for the victors, who also got tremendous serving from Najiah Knight, including 10 aces.

“It was a long day of volleyball and our tanks were getting empty by the championship match but they dug deep and really wanted the win,” noted coach Dawn Eynetich.

News and notes

Pleasant Hill hosted and won the Pleasant Hill Volleyball Invitational two Saturdays ago, with wins in the championship bracket over North Douglas, Scio and Burns. The Billies offense was led by junior Cheyenne Green, junior Ruby Jackson and freshman Anna Crawford

***

Burns senior OH Mackenzie King’s high school career is over. The standout was averaging four kills and almost three digs per set before she went down with a torn ACL in the quarterfinals of the Creswell Tournament almost three weeks ago. We wish her a speedy recovery…

***

Portland Christian finished its league season with a perfect 14-0 slate. The Royals did not drop a single set and that league includes recent state power Gaston

 ***

The state playoffs are looming. The rankings freeze date in 4A is tomorrow at 10 p.m. For 6A, 3A and 1A it’s Saturday at 10 p.m. For 5A and 2A, it’s Tuesday at 10 p.m.

The playoffs commence with first round matches in 6A, 3A and 1A one week from today!

Mighty Mites

We asked coaches this week to tell us about their “Mighty Mites.”

A Mighty Mite is a six-rotation or front row player who stands 5-6 or shorter and is making major contributions to her team this year. She is not a three-rotation setter or just a back row contributor.

Here’s what we received:

Elka Fisher, 5-5 Sr. OH, Toledo – Fisher has never been defined by her height on the volleyball court. “She has always been a huge part of our team and game because of her flying around abilities as well as her bigger than life hits,” said coach Crystal Taylor.

Kate Gore, 5-6 Sr. OH/RS, Wilsonville – Gore is a high flyer who jumps well and hits the ball hard. She is comfortable on either pin and loves the challenge of blocking the other team’s top hitter. She was even called on to play middle one match!

Jocelyn Graham, 5-4 Soph. OH, Burns – Graham has big shoes to fill taking over on the outside for standout senior hitter Mackenzie King, who recently injured a knee. “Jocelyn has answered the call and is exciting to watch,” said coach Paula Toney. “She jumps really well, plays tough defense and has an aggressive serve.”

Jeryn Hildenbrand, 5-6 Jr. RS, Westside Christian – “This explosive undersized lefty brings down a hammer that is hard to defend,” said coach Kristina Thom. Hildenbrand has every shot in the book and is adept attacking front row or back. She also has exceptional ball control and can score in bunches from behind the service line.

Emma Kness, 5-5 Sr. OH, Eagle Point – Kness is a small but has big game, noted coach Jacob Schauffler. “She’s a tremendous server, passer and hitter!” he added.

Momi Leininger, 5-1 Jr. OH, Vernonia – A versatile player who has been a defender only, but has also played setter and on the right, Leninger finished the season on the outside. “Her tenacity has made her a versatile player and she betters the ball with every contact,” said coach Teresa Williams

Mahala McCrae, 5-5 Sr. S/OH/RS, North Salem – McCrae sets back row and hits when she is up front. She is always a major contributor. “Her understanding of the game, natural athleticism, and her understanding of how you can be strategic with your ball placement has made her a key piece to our team,” said coach Katie Mitchell.

Ella Perry, 5-4 Soph. S, Westside Christian – A sparkplug-type player who plays big, Perry now has 600 assists and 60 aces on the year. “When she is in the front row she does NOT back down from the opportunity to destroy an overpass at the net and explodes into the air to crush that ball,” said coach Kristina Thom. “She can beautifully put up a ball for her offense, but even better than that is the way she puts up a celebration for everything they do. If you get a chance to watch her explode into the air when her teammates have success you will surely fall more in love with the game of volleyball.”

Lennon Riddle, 5-5 Sr. OH, North Bend – Riddle is the team leader in kills with 211. “She is much shorter than all of our opponents, but she swings so aggressively and is smart with her shot selection,” noted coach Summer Sawyer. “She has a crazy vertical and dominates the front row.”
