Glide surprises in 2A/1A

The Glide Wildcats were seeded 15th out of 16 teams in the 2A/1A “Title Week” tournament, but emerged as champions after knocking off previously-undefeated Kennedy in the Saturday final, 11-6. The title was the third since 2006 for Glide but the first for first-year head coach Justin Bennett.

Both teams prevailed in tense, low-scoring semifinal games earlier in the day, but Kennedy, to many observers, came out worse for the wear. The Trojans appeared weary prior to first pitch of the championship game and Glide (14-2) took advantage, scoring nine runs in the first two innings to build an insurmountable lead.

Colby Bucich, Trever Short and Mason Delcollo sparked the offense for Glide, while Short starred on the mound. The senior threw 84 pitches in the 3-1 semifinal win over Heppner / Ione and had only 26 pitches left, according to state-imposed pitch count limitations. Short came on in relief with two outs in the fifth to snuff out a Kennedy rally. He retired seven Trojan batters with those 26 pitches, including the title-clinching strikeout on his last pitch. Incredible!

Thurston for more wins

Thurston got off to a slow start to 2021, losing three of its first four games. But the Colts closed on a 12-game winning streak, including a 15-5 win over 10-3 Churchill, to finish 15-4.

“The first week was tough, as we had a handful of athletes finishing up fall sports,” head coach Dennis Minium explained. “We didn’t have a full varsity practice until the Friday before our first game.”

Thurston stood at 3-4 going into the eighth game of the season, versus traditional 3A power Pleasant Hill. The Colts won that game, 8-0, to jump start its long wining streak.

“We made a few lineup adjustments and then everything seemed to click with the guys and we took off from there,” Minium said. “It was fun to watch. They didn’t get down when we feel behind in games and they knew we were never out of games. We focused on things we could control. I honestly can’t say enough about our guys this year.”

The team’s starters consisted of two seniors, three juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen. The two seniors, catcher Isaiah Burke and pitcher Tanner Windom, were two of the team’s stars and will be missed, but the talent coming back stamps Thurston as one of the 5A favorites for 2022.

“Our two seniors were outstanding leaders and mentors to our young program,” Minium said. “We showed up to practice every day and worked hard to get better.”

Grizzled

McMinnville made news during the regular season when it blanked Jesuit, 10-0. The Grizzlies, who finished 12-6, made more news during the culminating week, when they handed Grant its only loss of the season. Pacific Conference Pitcher of the Year Ky Hoskinson, a junior, threw a complete game, three-hitter and fanned 10 in the 4-1 win.

McMinnville could be a force in 2022. The team graduates All-League pitcher Casey Henderson, among four seniors. But the Grizz return Hoskinson, unanimous First Team All-League catcher Parker Guinn (.469; 10 doubles) and unanimous All-League OF Braden Woods (.444, team-high 28 hits). That’s a great core to build around.

Getting a kick out of baseball

After going undefeated on the gridiron during Season 2, four members of the Sunset Apollos football team helped the baseball team finish 13-5 and 8-4in the Metro League. Nick Molitor, a wide receiver for the football team, hit .435 while playing CF and was a unanimous All-League pick. The other dual sport athletes were Nic Janati (3B/C/WR), Kyle Jaekel (OF/QB) and Sam Harker (RHP/Kicker).

Odds and ends…

For the third straight year, Thurston baseball finished among the top four in 5A for GPA… Pendleton pushed a run across on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to win the IMC League Championship, played during culminating week, 7-6, over Hood River Valley. The Buckaroos will graduate five key members of their 15-3 league-champion team, but return four All-League members to build around, including co-Player of the Year Payton LambertMason Spellecy, the other IMC co-Player of the Year, leads four key returnees for HRV. It should be quite a battle in the East next season!

Wilsonville returns eight starters from a lineup that batted .335 on the season…Rainier senior left Brayden Marcum tossed two no-hitters in 2021 where he struck out every batter. He finished the year just shy of 100 Ks over 42+ innings and allowed just two earned…St. Paul sophomore 1B Warren Rose finished at exactly .500 for the season. That’s not half bad!
