Still undefeated!

It was an eventful week for two of the three remaining undefeated teams in the OSAA.

Both South Salem and Wilsonville needed historic performances from players to keep their unbeaten streaks alive.

South Salem (20-0) won three games from Sprague, 9-8, 10-2 and 15-4.

Game 1, played Tuesday, was outrageous.

South Salem trailed, 7-2, before rallying for the win. All nine Saxon runs came via home runs. Teagan Scott and Sawyer Nelson hit back-to-back solo shots in the third. Nelson hit a three-run homerun in the fourth. Nelson then hit a two-run homerun – his third of the day in consecutive at-bats– in the sixth to cut Sprague’s lead down to 8-7. The next hitter, Noah Scharer, was hit by a pitch. Gavin Price followed with a go-ahead, two-run homerun to give South Salem a 9-8 lead.

Sprague would get a couple on with two outs in the seventh. South Salem then intentionally walked Boyd Messman – who’d earlier hit a three-run bomb – to load the bases. The next hitter, Jace Dalton, lined a ball to center, but right Noah Scharer for the final out.

Game 2 was a South Salem rout. Price hit a homerun in the top of the first to set the tone.

Game 3 was as crazy as the first! Sprague took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first, highlighted by an Avery Lohrman 3-run homerun. Four lead changes thereafter characterized this back-and-forth affair. In the bottom of the sixth, Price hit a solo shot to knot things at 11-11. In the top of the seven, Dalton hit a mammoth 3-run shot to give Sprague a 14-11 lead. South scored three in the bottom of the seventh to tie it up – highlighted by a Nelson two-run HR – to send the game to extras. Sprague’s Riley Wilson and South’s Ben Hennan traded zeroes in the eighth. After holding Sprague scoreless in the top of the ninth, South won in in the bottom half on a Jackson Buckingham RBI single – his fifth hit of the night – to score Nelson, who’d singled to lead off the inning and stole second to get into scoring position.

Wilsonville (21-0) won two games last week, 7-1 over Putnam and 8-7 over Aloha.

The Aloha game featured an amazing performance from Wilsonville senior catcher Mark Wiepert. He went 3-for-3 with three home runs and six RBIs.

We are being told that only once before this week had any Oregon player homered in three consecutive at-bats and both Nelson for South Salem and Wiepert achieved the feat two days apart!!! Amazing!

The third unbeaten team, Blanchet Catholic (21-0) had a ho-hum week that included a 14-0 win over Yamhill-Carlton and two forfeit wins over Sheridan. The Cavaliers will be tested this week with two versus Santiam Christian.

***

Incidentally, there are now only three winless teams remaining in the Association. The number was four as of last week, but Eddyville Charter / Siletz Valley won a game. Congrats!

Tigers paws to celebrate

Clatskanie won two of three games last week versus Knappa to take control of the Northwest League chase with just three games remaining.

Tuesday's game went to Clatskanie, 7-1, on the road. Lucas Andreasen had two hits and two driven home for the Tigers. Zach Mollenhour got the win in relief. Knappa got 2.2 innings of no-hit baseball from Jude Miller.

Game 2 on Friday, the first of a double dip at Clatskanie, went to Knappa, 9-1. The Loggers got a dominant pitching performance from Lukas Masters, who tossed a complete-game five-hitter with nine strikeouts; and Karson Casper and Ethan Olson combined for five RBIs.

The second game of the doubleheader, and the rubber game of the series, was scoreless until the bottom of the third, when Andreasen’s two-out, two-run single highlighted a three-run frame for Clatskanie. Knappa rallied to tie in the back-and-forth contest, before Clatskanie plated the winning run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from freshman Will Van Voorst, his second hit of the day. Mollenhour pitched a complete game for the Tigers for the win.

Taft takes dream matchup

Friday’s PacWest Conference clash between Taft and Santiam Christian featured two pitchers who entered the game with ERAs below 0.19.

Taft won, 6-0, behind Zach Hankins, who kept his ERA at zero for the year by twirling a one-hitter in which he fanned 18.

Taft’s offense got to Santiam Christian ace Josh Riddle with some big hits, but also benefited from Santiam Christian errors.

Taft won again on Monday, 3-2.

Champing at the bit

Saturday’s game featuring defending 3A champion Warrenton and defending 2A/1A champion Umpqua Valley Christian went to UVC, 3-0.

Ty Hellenthal pitched a complete-game, three hitter, walking none and fanning six. He also went 3-for-3 at the plate.

Talon McGrorty was very good for Warrenton.  He gave up just seven hits.

“We made a few plays in the outfield, and Ty made some big pitches against an excellent opponent,” said UVC coach Dave York. “Lennie Wolfe is a legend in Oregon High School Baseball, and anytime we have a chance to compete with Warrenton, it’s a privilege.”

The playoffs are coming!

The first playoff games of 2025 are just 11 days away. One hundred six (106) of the 200 teams playing ball in 2025 will qualify for post-season play, as follows:

5A – 16 teams, consisting of four each from the two larger leagues, three each from the two smaller ones and the next two highest-ranked teams.

4A – 16 teams, consisting of two teams each from six leagues, plus the four winners of play-in games. The play-in games will pit the third-place team from each league plus the next two highest-ranked.

3A – 20 teams, consisting of the top 2-3 teams from the various leagues/districts (15 total), plus the next five highest ranked.

2A/1A -- 22 teams, consisting of the top 2-4 teams from the various leagues/districts (18 total), plus the next four highest ranked.

Thurston, the two-time defending OSAA 5A state champion, won its seventh straight Midwestern League title, wrapping up an unbeaten league slate with three shutout wins over Springfield last week.

The game’s only run came with one out in the eighth, when Foglio, Nick Sousa and Caleb Tiede came through with successive base hits.

***

Crosshill Christian split a Friday double header with Monroe / Alsea. It was enough to clinch a spot in the league tournament, which marks the first playoff appearance for the Eagles in their third year as a program. Crosshill Christian (13-9) also clinched a winning regular season record for the first time in program history.

***

Regis swept three last week from East Linn Christian, thanks to a robust offense that produced 39 hits and 42 runs; and strong pitching from sophomores Owen Eaton, Jake Bohnke and Korben Schumacher, who combined to allow two runs and only one hit over the three games.

A word about baseball stat leaders

Some teams do not take stats.

Some coaches are reluctant to share stats, or choose not to for other reasons.

Some coaches do not check emails. Others do not respond to emails. Others reply with information only intermittently.

All of the above are reasons why players who have seemingly qualified for at least one stat category do not appear below.

For better or worse, we at OSAAtoday rely exclusively on coach-supplied information for our baseball lists.

No player-supplied info. No info furnished by school administrators. And definitely no parents.

If you or someone you know merits being on one or more lists below and does not appear, you are encouraged to contact the coach and ask him to submit.

Stats categories

We continue our rundown this week of those Oregon ballplayers putting up numbers on diamonds around the state.

The information below comes exclusively from baseball coaches. Baseball coaches who have not contributed to the lists below, but have players who qualify, may contact John Tawa at [email protected] to learn how to get their players on these lists.

Note the new thresholds in many categories this week. An asterisk (*) means that the player qualifies given the current thresholds, but that we lack up-to-date information on the player.
