In this final Notebook of 2025, find info on the state championship games, complete All-State teams, our final college commitment list and our final stat leaders and stat superlatives.

As I seem to write every year, it has been my absolute pleasure to cover the teams, players and coaches, and the sport itself, all season long. Thanks to the amazing coaches who support what I do with enthusiasm. You make it fun!

We are the champions!

Last Saturday, the OSAA and OnPoint Community Credit Union determined five state champions. Only one of the 2024 champions, Umpqua Valley Christian in 2A/1A, repeated. West Linn, which was going for four in a row in 6A; and Thurston and Scappoose, which were seeking to win three straight times in 5A and 4A, respectively; fell short of the finals. West Linn lost in the second round to South Medford. Thurston and Scappoose bowed out in semifinal games, Thurston to Canby and Scappoose to Pendleton / Nixyaawii.

Only two OSAA-ranked No. 1 teams, Umpqua Valley Christian in 2A/1A and Blanchet Catholic in 3A, won state titles. 5A champion Summit was the No. 5 seed, 4A champion Pendleton / Nixyaawii came into the playoffs No. 9 and 6A champion Sunset was seeded eleventh. To have three teams seeded outside the top four in their respective classifications earn state titles is unusual but not surprising given how unpredictable the sport can be in a single-elimination playoff format.

In the 6A final, Sunset scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to rally past Grant for its first title since 1994. Parker Raubuch, who struggled as the starting pitcher last year when the Apollos lost in the finals to West Linn, 8-4, pitched well to get the win for Sunset. Grant, which beat the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds to reach the final, was playing for the title for the first time since 1958.

In the 5A final, No. 5 Summit defeated No. 3 Canby, 5-1, with a fundamental approach that included pitching to contact, playing solid defense and getting ‘em on, getting ‘em over and getting ‘em in. The win marked No. 100 all-time, across every sport, for the Storm in state championship finals.

In 4A, Pendleton had been in six state championship games previously without a state title to its name. On Saturday, playing in a co-op with Nixyaawii, the Buckaroos didn’t just walk through the championship door; they stampeded. Sixteen hits. Fourteen runs. Great pitching. Pendleton / Nixyaawii did everything right in its dominating 14-3 win over top-seeded Marist Catholic.

In the 3A championship game, top-seeded Blanchet Catholic won the title, 4-3, in its first year returning to 3A. A wild pitch in the bottom of the last scored the winning run to beat second-seeded Caascade Christian, handing the Cavaliers their first-ever state title.

In 2A/1A, top-seeded Umpqua Valley Christian repeated as champion by defeating No. 2 seed Kennedy, the 2022 and 2023 champions; 2-1, in a route-going performance by star hurler Ty Hellenthal.

In case you missed it…

Hours after our June 3 Notebook was published, the state semifinals were conducted. Here are those recaps from a week ago Tuesday:

6A

No. 9 Grant 8, No. 5 Jesuit 2 – Junior RHP Jinki Tomita needed just 83 pitches to go the distance and Kaeden Cruse had two homers and five RBIs as the Generals gave the large fan base that traveled to support them lots to cheer about in the road win.

No. 11 Sunset 5, No. 7 McMinnville 1Kruz Schoolcraft tossed a complete-game two-hitter and Cole Sauter had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Apollos back to the title game for the second straight year. Sunset scored four runs in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie.

5A

No. 5 Summit 9, No. 1 Wilsonville 2 – Ace Alex Via threw a complete game for the Storm, who played flawless defense behind him. Home runs from Tanner McIntyre and Jackson Parker highlighted the nine-hit attack for Summit, which opened up an early 5-0 lead and upended the top-seeded Wildcats, ending their quest for an undefeated season.

No. 3 Canby 2, No. 2 Thurston 0 -- A pitcher's duel between Canby's Jack Brauckmiller and Thurston's Grady Saunders went Canby's way when the Cougars scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. The first run scored on a wild pitch, while Brady Froyd's hit delivered an insurance run. Brauckmiller went the distance, striking out seven while giving up just four hits and a lone walk. Saunders also went seven and he struck out 11.

4A

No. 1 Marist Catholic 7, No. 5 Henley 5 – Chad Turner had two hits and three RBIs as Marist Catholic knocked off Henley in the semifinals for the second straight year. The Spartans built a 5-1 early lead, then withstood a furious Hornet rally despite the absence of standout Mark Carpenter, the two-time 4A POY. Niko Leyba took the win for Marist. Conner Shively went 3-for-4 in the loss for Henley.

No. 7 Pendleton / Nixyaawii 10, No. 3 Scappoose 2 – Pendleton / Nixyaawii scored seven runs over the first two innings, which was more than enough to oust the two-time defending champions. Evan Lehnert went six on the bump for the Buckaroos, giving up just one run on six hits; and Vance Nelson drove in three. He finished with two hits, as did Mason Strong, Art Hill, Colin Harrington and Colson Primus. Despite being down big, Scappoose never gave up the fight. With seven hits on the day, including two each from Riley DuBois and Trever Olsen, Scappoose threatened throughout the game, with men on base in every inning but one.

3A

No. 1 Blanchet Catholic 2, No. 4 Taft 1 – Drew Bartels outdueled Zack Hankins and the top-seeded Cavaliers beat Taft by a single run for the third time this year to advance to the finals. Bartels fanned 10 over seven innings and allowed just three hits. Hankins also struck out ten while giving up four hits. Three came in the second inning, when Hankins gave up his first earned runs of the year. Lakaios Quintero and Noah Hancock delivered the RBIs.

No. 2 Cascade Christian 3, No. 3 Warrenton 2 – The Challengers scored three in the bottom of the first and made the runs hold up to oust the defending champions. Grady Sickler was great as the starter for Cascade Christian, yielding just two hits; and CJ Bonner slammed the door in the seventh. Head coach Kevin Shafer called it a great win for a young team that made the plays when needed and had delivered clutch at bats in key moments. Talon McGrorty threw 5.1 innings in relief for Warrenton, allowing no hits while striking out eight.

2A/1A

No. 1 Umpqua Valley Christian 6, No. 4 Knappa 0 – Ty Hellenthal threw a complete game shutout, fanning 11 while walking just one for the defending champion Monarchs. Teagan Sprague went 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs for the victors. Hellenthal and Max Chrisenbery each had two hits. Hellethal drove in two; Chrisenbery scored two.

No. 2 Kennedy 8, No. 19 Portland Christian 3 – Kennedy scored six in the third to put this game away early and send the Trojans back to the title game for the third time in four years. Kennedy drew eight walks from Portland Christian pitchers and saw Creo Walker get two hits and drive in four, including a bases-clearing double; in support of winning pitcher Gio Vaquera, who went the first five innings and allowed just one run on two hits with six Ks.

Final news and notes…

Jeff Miller, who coached Knappa for 26 seasons, starting in 1999, and won four state titles with the Loggers has retired from the dugout after compiling a record of 490-121. Miller, who was MaxPreps Small School National Coach of the Year in 2018, will continue to teach at the school. Miller currently sits No. 17 on the state’s all-time career wins list and his winning percentage of 80 percent ranks him at or near the very top.

Miller was asked after his first undefeated season whether he would move on to a big school and responded, “No. Small schools need good coaches, too.”

Said one fan about Miller: “Jeff is very much not defined by being a baseball coach. He also teaches AP courses, is the biggest supporter of other programs at the school, is a great chef, and a world traveler.”

Speaking personally, my life has been enriched by knowing Coach Miller. I wish him success and joy in all his future endeavors.

***

Matt Bailie has resigned as head baseball coach at Westview to become the school’s athletic director. Bailie coached the Wildcats for eight seasons and helped them win the 6A state title in 2018, his first year at the helm. Best wishes, Coach!

***

It is only early June and already three Oregon high school baseball players have made their MLB debuts, including Mick Abel (RHP; Phillies; Jesuit) and Jacob Melton (OF; Astros; South Medford).

YOU CAN GET THERE FROM HERE!

Don’t ever stop grinding! Don’t ever stop dreaming.

***

It is too early to think about next year?

Kennedy was very young in 2A/1A and will probably open as favorite. So, too, Cascade Christian in 3A.

Junction City should be formidable in 4A.

Thurston and South Salem have impact players returning in 5A and 6A, respectively.

Will that be how it turns out?

Or course not!

It’s baseball. Anything can and will happen.

***

Rosters have been announced for the Richardson Oregon All-Star Series taking place June 21-22 at Goss Stadium on the campus of Oregon State University in Corvallis. The two-day, two-game showcase features the top senior high school players from 6A and 5A.

Congratulations to Zack Hankins of Taft! The junior lefty’s 0.09 ERA this year is the lowest single-season ERA in state history.

Others who had historic seasons -- landing among the top 10 all-time in a single season -- include Hankins and Jake Sproul of Myrtle Point / Pacific in strikeouts; Zack Dugas of Illinois Valley and Miles Lute of Crosshill Christian in stolen bases; and Dylan Cuff of Blanchet Catholic, Sawyer Nelson of South Salem and Mark Wieters of Wilsonville in RBIs.

Any varsity head baseball coach (or authorized proxy) wanting to add someone to a list, or modify an entry, may email [email protected], list the category and supply the information necessary, using the specific format for the category, by no later than 9 a.m. Thursday.
