On Saturday, Oregon high school dance teams kicked off their traditional competitive season with events at Canby and Philomath.

For the next six weeks, teams will vie at local competitions to prepare for the OSAA dance and drill championships next month.

Philomath Competition

In the Show division, Clackamas, debuting its show titled “Slumber,” and earned first place with a score of 86.03. West Linn finished second (76.00), followed closely by Parkrose (74.93).   

In the 4A division, Stayton earned first-place (85.07) with its routine titled “Now & Forever.” Philomath, performing their routine “The Climb,” was second with a 77.70.

Milwaukie (5A) debuted its state piece “Who We Are” earning a score of 76.20. Centennial (6A) earned a 75.23 for their performance.

The Cavalettes also took home Grand Champion honors. 

Canby Competition

Five teams competed in the 4-1A division at Canby. Valley Catholic topped the competition to earn first place with a score of 82.80, followed by Astoria (79.03), Sweet Home (63.63), Banks (58.80), and Grant Union (53.47).

In the 5A division, Pendleton (78.20) claimed first place over North Eugene’s routine titled “Envy” (74.97).    

Barlow topped the 6A division with a score of 71.47. Reynolds was second (66.27), followed by Century (60.20).  

Glencoe (74.80), debuting its show “Now or Never,” narrowly beat Sheldon (74.17) for first place in the Show division. Grant finished third (72.73), followed by David Douglas (65.13).  

Teams in the 4-1A, 5A, 6A, and Show divisions will compete on Feb. 8 at Stayton.
